The hotel director was one of the few who remained at the MADISON during certain times of the pandemic. At the beginning of the second lockdown in November 2020, he moved at short notice into the hotel with his wife and their then nine-month-old son, Moritz. “The reasons were pretty pragmatic,” says Kleinertz. “Almost all of our staff were on reduced hours. Only the trainees weren’t, because we’re responsible for teaching them and they have to continue their training. It is, after all, the next generation who is the future of the hotel industry. Being constantly on site, I was available to consult when our department heads had to stay at home.” And every day: water, water, water While other hotels were closed during lockdown, the MADISON stayed open throughout. Tourists were not allowed, but people travelling for business were. “Lots of actors and film production staff are regular guests and they often stay here for several weeks during shoots. That’s what saved us, because films and series continued to be shot – even if considerably less,” says Thomas Kleinertz. The MADISON had an average occupancy rate of 15 percent during the lockdowns, which was not even enough to cover running costs. In normal times, the figure is at least 80 percent. Only the fifth and sixth floor were open; the remaining four corridors were neither heated nor lit. But they still had to be looked after. “A hotel building is alive and needs to be kept moving all the time. Denn am Anfang des zweiten Lockdowns im November 2020 ist er kurzerhand mit seiner Frau und dem damals neun Monate alten Sohn Moritz ins Hotel gezogen. „Das hatte ganz pragmatische Gründe“, so Kleinertz. „Fast alle Mitarbeiter waren in Kurzarbeit. Nur die Azubis nicht, weil wir einen Lehrauftrag haben und sie ihre Ausbil- dung weitermachen sollten. Schließlich sichert der Nachwuchs auch die Zukunft des Hotelgewer- bes. Ständig vor Ort, stand ich dann immer als Ansprechpartner zur Verfügung, auch wenn die Abteilungsleiter zu Hause bleiben mussten.“ Und jeden Tag: wässern, wässern, wässern Während andere Hotels im Lockdown geschlossen waren, hatte das MADISON durchgehend geöffnet. Nur die fünfte und sechste Etage waren geöffnet, die restlichen vier Flure wurden weder geheizt noch beleuchtet. Trotzdem mussten sie bewirtschaf- tet werden. „Ein Hotelgebäude lebt und muss 2020 war ein Jahr, das viele gern übersprungen hätten. Auch das MADISON hat um seine Existenz gekämpft.
