Dear Michel,
Hamburg has so many beautiful churches,
but there is only one Michel. When I think about
you, how long you have been part of my life, I
am filled with wonder. It has been more than
25 years! It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? When the
MADISON first opened its doors, I was there –
on the reception desk to start with, and later as
head of reception – and you have been by my
side almost every day ever since. It is always a
real privilege for me to be so close to Hamburg’s
landmark. With your 132-metre-tall spire, you will
always attract the tourists, even though you now
have competition from the Elbphilharmonie. And
there are probably very few visitors who haven’t
stood on your viewing platform at 106 metres to
admire the city below. They no longer necessarily
have to clamber up the 452 steps on foot, because
there is now a convenient lift. I have been the
rooms division manager at the MADISON for the
past three years. From my office window, I feel
as if I can almost touch you – that’s how close
we have now become. What has brought me even
closer to you ever since is the Michel trumpeter,
known as the Türmer, who I hear play almost every
morning at 10 o’clock on the dot. Twice a day,
also at 9 o’clock in the evening, the sound can be
heard – a traditional ritual with a history dating
back more than 300 years. While many things in
Hamburg and around the world are changing, one
thing is certain: every morning at 10 o’clock, the
Türmer stands on the Michel and plays his chorale
in all four cardinal directions. It is a moment for
me to reflect, let the sound drift over the rooftops
and appreciate this bond I have with the city.
Thank you.

www.st-michaelis.deLieber Michel,
Was mich seitdem
Michel und spielt seinen Choral in alle vier Him-
melsrichtungen.
Danke.
