enn mir als junger Hotelfachmann jemand
gesagt hätte, dass ich gleich in meiner
ersten beruflichen Station hängen bleibe,
hätte ich ihm einen Vogel gezeigt. 17 Jahre
in einem Hotel? Unvorstellbar!“ Thomas
„Aber wissen Sie was? Es war die
beste Entscheidung meines Lebens!“
Einmal MADISON, immer MADISON
Danach? Raus in die Welt! Erste Station:
Hamburg. Kleinertz bewirbt sich bei den First-
Class-Hotels der Stadt, unter anderem dem
MADISON.
anderen Hotels – vergessen.
Seit 2014
ist er zudem Geschäftsführer.
‘To be honest, if someone had told me as
a young hotel clerk that I would end up staying in
my first professional post, I would have told them
they were crazy. Seventeen years at one hotel?
Inconceivable!’ Thomas Kleinertz is sitting in
front of his espresso in the lobby with a smile on
his face. ‘But do you know something? It was the
best decision of my life!’
The hotel – a place of happiness
Even as a child, the 41-year-old wanted to
work in a hotel. “I always stayed at a hotel on
the North Sea island of Juist with my parents
during the holidays, where I became friends with
the son of the owner,’ explains Thomas Kleinertz.
‘I became familiar with every part of the hotel and
found it all fascinating. Particularly the service
aspect. For me, the hotel was always synonymous
with happiness.’ There was no question: after
leaving school, he would do a hotel manage-
ment apprenticeship in a small private hotel
in Düsseldorf.
Once MADISON, always MADISON
After that? Out into the big, wide world. First stop:
Hamburg. Kleinertz applied for jobs at the city’s
first-class hotels including the MADISON. ‘My
Managing Director at the time gave me the tip,’ he
recalls. ‘He said: “That is a great hotel, owned and
managed by a woman.” That was rather unusual at
the time and I was curious.’ He sensed he was in
the right place as soon as he set foot in the foyer. ‘I
immediately felt at home. After the interview and a
tour of the hotel, I said to myself: This is where I
want to work!’ Forget all the other hotels. Thomas
Kleinertz started working as a receptionist at the
MADISON on 1 March 2002. One year later, he
was promoted to the post of shift manager and also
became the sales manager. Marlies Head had her
eye on him and saw his potential. She made him
deputy director in 2007 and then director in 2009.
He has also been the Managing Director since
2014.
A director with heart
Thomas Kleinertz has been working at the MADISON for 17 years. He started as a receptionist
and now runs the hotel together with owner Marlies Head – and a great deal of empathy.
