Hier schlägt
das Herz von St. Pauli
Schräg, schrill, schön: Das SCHMIDTS TIVOLI am Spielbudenplatz
begeistert seit fast 30 Jahren mit großen Musiktheaterproduktionen.
The heart of St. Pauli beats here
Bizarre, brash, beautiful: SCHMIDTS TIVOLI on Spielbudenplatz
has been delighting audiences for almost 30 years with grand
musical theatre productions.
The Reeperbahn is renowned for providing fun
and entertainment. Schmidts Tivoli on Spiel-
budenplatz plays a big part in this – the heart of
St. Pauli beats here. Visitors flock to the theatre
from all over Germany to see the grand musical
theatre productions with imaginative sets, ex
quisite guest performances and offbeat revues in
one of the city’s finest auditoriums, which has a
history, by the way: it was originally an open-air
beer garden – between the front and rear building!
The gallery was incorporated in 1896 and a
roof was built over the garden. When the nine-
teenth-century building was renovated in 1990,
the golden pillars, the large round mirror and
the old murals were exposed. Since opening in
autumn 1991, the building has virtually remained
in its original restored condition – although it
goes without saying that it is now equipped with
state-of-the-art technology. And what are we
talking about here? Musical theatre, of course!
Theatre entrepreneur Corny Littmann and asso-
ciates have turned the Tivoli into a leading venue
where German-language musicals are completely
self-produced, from the initial idea to the pre-
miere. And there is also a record! The musical
Heiße Ecke has become a real long runner since
its premiere in 2003: having been performed in
the same theatre for the past 16 years, the St.
Pauli production is the most successful German
musical ever. It’s good to know that it’s still on the
programme – no wonder with such a success story!
ür Spaß und Entertainment ist die

St. Paulis: Aus ganz Deutschland strömen
Besucher in das Haus, um große Musiktheaterpro-
duktionen mit fantasievoller Ausstattung, exquisite
Gastspiele und ausgeflippte Revuen in einem der
schönsten Säle der Stadt zu erleben. Übrigens ein
Saal mit Geschichte: Ursprünglich war er ein
Biergarten unter freiem Himmel – zwischen dem
Vorder- und dem Hinterhaus! 1896 wurde die
Galerie eingezogen und der Garten überdacht. Als
der Gründerzeitbau 1990 renoviert wurde, legte
man die goldenen Säulen, die großen Rundspiegel
und alte Wandmalereien frei. Seit der Eröffnung
im Herbst 1991 präsentiert sich das Haus
annähernd im historischen Ursprungszustand –
heute selbstverständlich ausgestattet mit moderns-
ter Technik. Und worum geht’s? Um Musiktheater
natürlich! Theatermacher Corny Littmann & Co.
wahren Dauerbrenner entwickelt: Mit inzwischen
16 Jahren En-suite-Spielzeit ist das St.-Pauli-Musical das erfolgreichste deutschsprachige
Musical. Schön: Nach wie vor steht es auf dem
Spielplan – kein Wunder bei dieser Erfolgsstory!
