Schon bei der Eröffnung platzt der Laden aus allen
Nähten. „Da wusste ich: Jetzt hast du es geschafft!“,
erinnert sich Eugen Block.
Flexible Arbeitszeiten waren der Schlüssel
Mittendrin: Schwester Marlies. Sie war es, die
ihrem älteren Bruder von ihrer Ausbildung zur
Hotelkauffrau und später von den USA vor-
schwärmte, wo sie ihren ersten Mann Arthur Head
kennenlernte. Und sie ist es auch, die Anfang der
70er die Personalverantwortung im Block House
übernimmt. Das von ihr gegründete Head College
bildet bis heute die Mitarbeiter und Führungs-
kräfte der Block Gruppe aus. „Ich habe damals so
viel gearbeitet, dass ich kaum noch stehen konnte“,
erzählt Marlies Head. „Es war schwierig, gutes
Personal zu bekommen. In meiner Verzweiflung
habe ich sogar Leute auf der Straße angespro-
chen.“ Sie führt flexible Arbeitszeitmodelle ein,
ermöglicht so auch jungen Müttern, Geld zu
verdienen – und bekommt dadurch gute Leute.
Noch heute wird Block House regelmäßig zu
einem der besten Arbeitgeber Hamburgs gekürt.
Der Traum: Black-Angus-Rinder züchten
Doch alles hat seine Zeit: Nach über 20 erfolgrei-
chen Jahren gehen die Geschwister schließlich
geschäftlich getrennte Wege, und Marlies Head
hilft 1993 ihrem eigenen Baby auf die Welt: dem
THE MADISON Hamburg. Auch ihr Bruder ist
weiter umtriebig: Zur Block Gruppe gehören heute
neben 52 Block House Restaurants auch das
Grand Elysée Hotel, ein eigenes Brauhaus sowie
eine Stiftung. Seit 2014 züchtet der Visionär
mithilfe von 29 Landwirten die nach der Wende
fast vergessene Rinderrasse Uckermärker in
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, und bald sollen auch
Black-Angus-Rinder dazukommen. „Das Ziel ist,
dass die regionalen Steaks irgendwann genauso
zart sind wie die aus Südamerika.“ Hat er
überhaupt noch Appetit auf Steaks? „Natürlich.
Ich gehe sogar regelmäßig in die Restaurants.
Am liebsten bin ich im Mittelweg. Das ist so ein
typisches Stadtteil-Block-House, wo man sich
trifft. So habe ich es mir immer gewünscht.“

at its opening. ‘That’s when I knew: you’ve made
it!’ recalls Eugen Block.
Flexible working hours were the key
In the thick of it all was sister Marlies. She was the
one who enthusiastically told her older brother all
about her hotel management training and her later
time in the USA, where she met her first husband
Arthur Head. And she was also the one who took
on responsibility for managing the staff at Block
House in the early 1970s. Head College, which she
founded, continues to train employees and managers
of the Block Group to this day. ‘I worked so much
back then that I could barely stand up,’ says Marlies
Head. ‘It was difficult to find good staff. In my
desperation, I even approached people on the street.’
She introduced flexible working models, helping
young mothers to earn money, and attracted good
people as a result. Block House is still regularly
named one of Hamburg’s best employers.
The dream: rearing Black Angus cattle
Yet there is a time for everything. After more
than twenty successful years, the siblings
ultimately went their separate ways and in 1993
Marlies Head brought her own baby to live:
THE MADISON Hamburg. Her brother is
still keeping busy: in addition to the 52 Block
House restaurants, the Block Group also owns the
Grand Elysée Hotel, a brewery house and an foun-
dation. Since 2014, the visionary has been raising
Uckermärker cattle with the help of 29 farmers
in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a breed that
was almost forgotten following the reunification
of Germany. Black Angus cattle are also set to
be added to the livestock in the near future. ‘The
aim is for the regional steaks to be as tender as
those from South America one day.’ Does he still
enjoy eating steak? ‘Of course. I even go to the
restaurants on a regular basis. I like to go to the
one on Mittelweg. It is a typical local Block House,
where people like to meet up. That is just how
I’ve always wanted it to be.’
