Sie stehen selbst noch hinter der Bar? Marlies Head: Wenn es sich einrichten lässt, immer wieder gern. Service ist mein Leben, damit bin ich groß geworden, da fühle ich mich zuhause. Ich bin eine Macherin, Hände in den Schoß legen ist nichts für mich. Was viele nicht wissen: Dieses Jahr feiern Sie nicht nur 25 Jahre MADISON, sondern auch ihr 60. Berufsjahr. Wollten Sie schon immer ins Hotelgewerbe? MH: Mit 16 Jahren wollte ich Fotografin werden. Bis zu dem Tag, an dem eine Berufsbera- terin zu uns in die Realschule kam und das Hotel- und Gastronomiegewerbe vorstellte. Bier zapfen, Betten machen, Gäste betreuen – das war es! Als ich nach Hause kam, sagte ich: „Mama, du musst mir eine Lehrstelle besorgen!“ Zugege- ben, ganz fremd war mir die Thematik nicht: Meine Eltern hatten im Oldenburger Land einen Lebensmittelhandel und eine Gaststätte. Wie ging es dann weiter? MH: Ich habe in Münster eine Ausbildung zur Hotelkauffrau gemacht, das war damals ganz neu. Danach bin ich in die USA, wollte die große Welt sehen und habe dort als Serviererin, im Coffee- shop und im Steakhouse gearbeitet. Ich hatte immer drei Jobs gleichzeitig. Später dann im Silicon Valley als Hotelhostess, Cocktailserviere- rin und Kassiererin. Da ging es gerade los mit dem Hightech-Hype. Die Mitarbeiter von IBM gingen bei uns ein und aus. Eine spannende Zeit. Damals habe ich auch meinen ersten Mann Arthur Head kennengelernt. Before Marlies Head sits down and relaxes at the bar with a glass of her favourite wine, she quickly draws another beer for a guest. You still work behind the bar yourself? Marlies Head: If it can be arranged, gladly. Service is my life, I grew up with it, it makes me feel at home. I’m a doer, sitting idly by with my hands in my lap isn’t for me. What a lot of people don’t know is that this year you not only celebrate 25 years of MADISON, but also your 60th year in the profession. Have you always wanted to go into the hotel business? MH: When I was 16, I wanted to be a pho- tographer. Up until the day when a careers advisor came to visit us at school and introduced us to the hotel and catering industry at any rate. Drawing beer, making beds, looking after guests – and that was it! When I got home, I said, ‘Mum, you’ve got to get me an apprenticeship!’. Admittedly, it wasn’t a completely foreign prospect to me: my parents had a store and a restaurant in the Oldenburger Land region. Then what happened? MH: I did an apprenticeship as a hotel clerk in Münster, which was quite new at the time. After that I went to the USA; I wanted to see the big wide world and I worked there as a waitress, in a coffee shop and a steakhouse. I’ve always had three jobs at once. Later, I worked in Silicon Valley as a hotel hostess, cocktail waitress and cashier. That’s when the high-tech hype was just starting. The employees of IBM used to come and go. An exciting time. That’s when I met my first husband, Arthur Head. „Ich bin Gastgeberin aus Leidenschaft“ Sie lebt, was sie liebt, und ist die Seele des MADISON. Auch sonst hat Inhaberin Marlies Head schon einiges auf die Beine gestellt.
