Willi, versprich mir das!“, ein zehnjäh- riger farbiger Junge zupft an Willis schwarzem Jackett. Ein Dutzend anderer Kinder wuseln um ihn herum. Aufgeregt plappernd laufen sie fröhlich zu ihren Eltern, die am Hintereingang schon auf sie warten. Es ist 18 Uhr, die Löwenschule ist gerade zu Ende. Willi lacht: „Na, das werden wir ja sehen! Erst mal musst du mir zeigen, dass du es wirklich kannst und noch mehr: dass du es willst.“ 22 afrikanische Sängerinnen und Sänger Willi Welp ist der Künstlerische Leiter des Musicals „Disneys Der König der Löwen“, die Kinder mit den afrikanischen Wurzeln gehören zum Nachwuchsprogramm. Lächelnd und auch ein wenig stolz schaut er ihnen nach. „Guck sie dir an: Das sind unsere Simbas und Nalas von morgen.“ Dreimal pro Woche kommen die Kinder für jeweils drei Stunden auf die andere Seite der Elbe zur Musical-Ausbildung und wachsen dabei über sich hinaus. Die besten von ihnen werden in zwei bis drei Jahren als Löwenkinder auf der Bühne stehen. „Es ist enorm wichtig, dass wir dieses Nachwuchsprogramm haben,“ erklärt Willi Welp. „Bei einem normalen Casting würden wir wohl kaum so viele Kinderdarsteller finden, die unseren hohen Anforderungen genügen und dann auch noch in Hamburg wohnen.“ Auch sonst sind die Ansprüche hoch: Sieben afrikanische Sänger müssen mindestens im Musical besetzt sein, so die Vorgaben von Disney. In Hamburg sind es 22. N „Dieses Musical ist nicht nur ein Meisterwerk. Es ist Kunst.“ “This musical is not just a master- piece. It’s art.” Willi Welp, Künstlerischer Leiter “I want to play Simba next year! Willi, promise me I will!” begs a ten-year-old coloured boy as he tugs on Willi’s black jacket. A dozen other children bustle around him. Chattering excitedly, they run happily to their parents who await them at the back entrance. It’s 6 p.m. and the Lions’ School has just finished. Willi laughs: “Well, let’s see. First you have to show me what you can really do, and even more: that you really want it.” 22 African singers Willi Welp is artistic director of the musical ‘Disney’s The Lion King’, and these children of African heritage are part of his programme for developing young talent. He watches them with pride. “Look at them – the Simbas and Nalas of tomorrow.” The children cross the Elbe for their musical training for three hours, three times a week, and they’re flourishing. The best of them will stand on the stage as lion cubs in two or three years. “It’s really important for us to have this talent development programme,” explains Willi Welp. “If we were to cast the roles normally, we would never find as many child performers, ones who meet our high demands and who live in Hamburg, too.” And there are other exacting requirements: Disney stipulates that the musical must feature at least seven African singers. Hamburg has 22. No other edition of ‘Disney’s The Lion King’ has so many. “That’s one of the reasons why it’s so good here,” explains Willi Welp.
