Dear Willkomm-Höft, You have been around for more than 60 years – and you have never changed your nation-unifying ritual: ‘Welcome to Hamburg. We are happy to welcome you in the Port of Hamburg.’ These words have been ringing out across the Elbe several times a day since June 1952 whenever a larger ship passes the Willkomm-Höft in Wedel – the world-famous ship welcoming station at the gates of Hamburg. And I always find it such a wonderful experience, because in no way is this some kind of superficial ‘Hello’: next to Wedel yacht harbour at the ‘Schulauer Fährhaus’, all incoming and outgoing vessels with a gross tonnage of more than 1,000 tonnes are welcomed with their national anthem and greeted in their own language! Smaller ships aren’t left out either, although these are not greeted by playing sounds, but by dipping the flag. Here is a nice anecdote: in the early days of the station, shanty choirs and Wedel Male Choral Society used to greet the ships by singing the national anthems live. Of course, that was a long time ago. Nowadays, the national anthems – more than 150 of them – are stored on a hard drive in the best sound quality. While guests dine at the ‘Schulauer Fährhaus’, the welcoming captains pro- vide them with a wealth of information about the passing ships over the speaker system. The main sources of information are over 17,000 index cards and the daily harbour report. The 60-metre-long pontoon provides a fantastic opportunity to see the cruise ships and huge container vessels up-close. Its canopied seating area offers seafarers and spectators a magnificent view and is also bathed in wonderfully atmospheric light in the evening. So delightfully romantic! (1) Pötte gucken in Wedel. Schulauer Fährhaus Liebes Willkomm-Höft, seit mehr als 60 Jahren gibt es dich – und dein völkerverbindendes Ritual hast du nie verändert: „Willkommen in Hamburg, wir freuen uns, Sie im Hamburger Hafen begrüßen zu dürfen.“ So schallt es seit Juni 1952 mehrmals täglich über die Elbe, wenn ein größerer Pott das Willkomm-Höft in Wedel – die weltbekannte Schiffsbegrüßungsanlage vor den Toren Hamburgs – passiert. Und das ist für mich immer wieder ein tolles Erlebnis, denn es handelt sich hier keinesfalls nur um ein oberfläch- liches „Hallo“: Neben dem Wedeler Jachthafen am „Schulauer Fährhaus“ werden alle ein- und aus- laufenden Schiffe mit einer Vermessung von über 1.000 BRZ mit ihrer Nationalhymne und in ihrer jeweiligen Landessprache begrüßt! Auch kleinere Schiffe bleiben nicht auf der Strecke. Allerdings werden diese nicht akustisch, sondern durch das Dippen der Flagge begrüßt. Schöne Anekdote: In den Anfängen der Anlage waren es zunächst noch Shanty-Chöre sowie der Wedeler Männergesangver- ein, die zur Schiffsbegrüßung live die Nationalhym- nen angestimmt haben. Das ist natürlich lange her. Heute kommen die mehr als 150 Nationalhymnen in bester Tonqualität von der Festplatte. Während man als Gast im „Schulauer Fährhaus“ lecker speist, vermitteln die Begrüßungskapitäne übrigens per Lautsprecher vielfältige Informationen über die vorbeiziehenden Schiffe. Hauptinformationsquellen sind über 17.000 Karteikarten und der „Tägliche Hafenbericht“. Eine großartige Gelegenheit, Kreuz- fahrern und Containerriesen ganz nah zu sein, ist der 60 Meter lange Ponton. Der bietet See- und Seh- leuten mit seinen überdachten Sitzplätzen nicht nur einen grandiosen Blick, er hüllt sich abends auch in stimmungsvolles Licht. Herrlich romantisch! Die Schiffsbegrüßungsanlage ist täglich ab 11.30 Uhr bis Sonnenuntergang besetzt. Am einfachsten ist sie mit dem HVV zu erreichen: S1 nach Wedel, dort in den Bus 189 Richtung Blankenese steigen bis zur Station Wedel, Elbstraße (Willkomm-Höft). Zum „Schulauer Fährhaus“ sind es 7 Minuten Fußweg. How do you get there? The ship welcoming station is manned daily from 11.30 a.m. until sunset. The easiest way to get there is by HVV: take the S1 to Wedel and catch the 189 bus towards Blankenese. Get off the bus at Wedel, Elbstraße (Willkomm-Höft).
